Area Converter
Square Feet To Square Meters, Acres And More

This area converter turns square feet to square meters, square yards, acres, hectares and square miles as you type. So one figure shows up in every unit at once. It also uses the exact squared factor for each unit and prints it, so you can check the maths. Because it all runs in this tab, nothing you type is uploaded or stored.

The short version

What An Area Converter Does

An area is a length times a length, so its unit is a square. Therefore, the factor between two area units is their length factor times itself. That is the one place area conversions trip people up.

That is what this square feet to square meters converter does for you. Because it holds the exact squared factor for every unit, it never slips in a plain length factor. For more detail, see the Wikipedia article on the square metre.

Next to each answer, the page shows the factor it used. For example, a square meter is about 10.7639 square feet, not 3.28. The page prints that line, so the squaring step is never forgotten.

It converts in every direction at once. So you type one value, and every metric and land unit updates together. That saves you looking up one pair at a time.

Also, nothing leaves this tab. So a figure from a floor plan, a plot listing or a paint job is safe to type, because the maths happens in your browser and the page stores nothing.

How Square Feet To Square Meters Works

First, the converter reads your number and its unit. Then it turns that into square meters, the base unit, because every area has a fixed factor to and from the square meter.

A one meter square divided into a grid of foot squares, showing that it holds about 10.76 of them
An area is a length times a length, so one square meter holds about 10.76 square feet, the length factor squared.

Next, it sends that value out to every other unit. One step to the base and one step back covers each pair. That is why all the rows agree at once.

Each factor is a squared constant. Because a foot is 0.3048 meters, a square foot is 0.3048 times 0.3048. So square feet to square meters uses about 0.092903, exact, not rounded.

The page also keeps far more digits than it shows. Therefore, the rounding on screen never feeds the next step. A round trip from one unit to another and back lands on the number you started with.

Why Area Factors Are Squared

A length converter multiplies by one factor. However, an area is two lengths, so its factor is that number squared, which is easy to forget.

Area converter with 100 square meters typed in, showing 1076.39 square feet and the acre with their factors
One value typed in square meters, read at once in every other unit, with the squared factor that produced each answer underneath.

For example, a meter is about 3.28 feet, but a square meter is about 10.76 square feet. So using 3.28 for an area undercounts it nearly threefold.

The same holds the metric way. Because a meter is a hundred centimeters, a square meter is a hundred squared. That is ten thousand square centimeters, not a hundred.

In short, multiply the factor by itself, then multiply the area by it. Still, this is exactly the step the converter does for you, so the squaring is never missed.

Metric And Land Units, Side By Side

The metric areas step by squared tens. So a square meter is ten thousand square centimeters, and a square kilometer is a million square meters, because each jump squares the length step.

Area converter with 1 acre typed in, showing 0.4047 hectares and 4046.86 square meters
An acre and a hectare are close but not equal, so the converter names each and moves between them exactly.

The land units have their own history. For example, an acre is 43560 square feet, and a hectare is 10000 square meters. So the two are close but not equal.

A hectare is the handy metric field. It is 10000 square meters, which is about 2.47 acres, and it is the common unit for land in most of the world.

An acre is the imperial field. It is defined through the square foot, so it ties back to the exact foot and does not line up neatly with the hectare.

What This Area Converter Will Not Do

It will not measure a shape. The page converts a single area figure you type, so it does not work out the area of a room or a plot from its sides.

Area converter set to 0 decimals, showing 1 square meter as 11 square feet while the factor keeps 10.7639
With 0 decimals the display shows 11 square feet, while the factor line keeps the exact 10.7639 behind it.

It will not use a plain length factor. Because an area needs the squared factor, the page squares it for you instead of letting a linear number slip in.

It will not confuse an acre with a hectare. They are close but different, so the page names each one and converts between them exactly.

It will not round away your precision. The full value is kept behind the scenes, and only the display is rounded to the decimals you choose. So nothing drifts between steps.

Step by step

How To Convert Square Feet To Square Meters Here

Four steps, and none of them need an account.

  • 1

    Type the area

Type any number, including a decimal. Because the converter reads as you type, the other units fill in before you finish.

  • 2

    Pick the unit you typed

Then pick the unit of that number: square feet, square meters, acres or any other. Since every row updates together, you only set the one you started from.

  • 3

    Read every unit at once

Next, read the matching value in each other unit, with the squared factor shown below it. So the answer and the maths behind it sit side by side.

  • 4

Copy or round as you like

Finally, choose how many decimals to show and copy the result. After that, the figure is ready for your plan, your listing or your quote.

Why this page

Why Use This Area Converter

Five reasons, and each one saves a lookup.

  • It squares the factor for you

Because an area needs the length factor squared, the page does that step for you. So a square meter never comes out as a plain 3.28 square feet by mistake.

  • It converts every unit at once

One value feeds every unit, so you never convert one pair at a time. Therefore, square meters to acres and back happen on the same screen.

  • It shows the exact factor

Each answer prints the factor it used. Hence you can check the maths yourself instead of trusting a black box.

  • It keeps full precision

The page rounds only what it shows, not what it keeps. As a result, a round trip returns the number you began with, with no drift.

  • Nothing uploads

The whole job runs in this browser tab. So a figure from a floor plan or a plot listing is safe to type and leaves no trace.

Rules of thumb

Habits That Keep Area Maths Right

Six habits that keep a conversion honest.

  • Always square the length factor An area factor is the length factor times itself. So for an area in meters and feet, use about 10.76, not 3.28.
  • Write the unit next to the number On its own, 50 means little, but 50 square meters is clear. Because a bare number hides the unit, a label stops a mix-up.
  • Keep acre and hectare apart An acre and a hectare are close but not equal. Therefore, name the one you mean, since a plot can look bigger or smaller by the slip.
  • Round at the end, not partway Each early rounding nudges the answer a little. Hence keep the full value until the last step, which is what this page does for you.
  • Mind very large and very small areas A square millimeter and a square kilometer sit far apart. Still, the converter keeps the digits, so a tiny face and a wide region both stay exact.
  • Sanity-check against something you know A square meter is about 10.76 square feet, and a hectare is about 2.47 acres. So compare a surprising answer with those, and a slip shows up at once.
Careful here

Six Ways Area Conversions Go Wrong

None of these breaks the maths, which is exactly why they slip through.

  • Using the length factor, not its square

Multiplying an area by 3.28 instead of 10.76 is the classic slip. So the figure comes out nearly three times too small.

  • Mixing acres and hectares

An acre is smaller than a hectare. However, they look similar in size, so reading one as the other misstates a plot.

  • Forgetting the metric jump is squared

A square meter is ten thousand square centimeters, not a hundred. Therefore, shifting two decimal places instead of four lands wide.

  • Treating an acre as a shape

An acre is an amount of area, not a set rectangle. So a plot of one acre can be long and thin or nearly as wide as it is long.

  • Rounding too soon

An answer rounded at every step collects error. Hence a figure that looks exact can be off once several conversions stack up.

  • Reading a square mile as a mile

A square mile is an area, while a mile is a length. So mixing them turns a region into a line.

Questions

Square Feet To Square Meters And Area Questions

Is this area converter free?

Yes. There is no account, no limit and no paid tier. So you can convert as many figures as you like.

Does it upload what I type?

No. The whole job runs in this browser tab, and nothing is sent anywhere. So a figure from a plan or a listing stays with you.

Which units does it cover?

It covers metric areas from square millimeters to square kilometers, the hectare, the square inch, foot, yard and mile, and the acre. So the common areas all update from one value.

How do I convert square meters to square feet?

Multiply by about 10.7639, which is 3.2808 squared. So 20 square meters is about 215.3 square feet.

How do I convert square feet to square meters?

Multiply by about 0.092903, which is 0.3048 squared. So 500 square feet is about 46.45 square meters.

How do I convert acres to hectares?

Multiply the acres by about 0.404686. So 10 acres is about 4.05 hectares, the reverse of the other direction.

How do I convert hectares to acres?

Multiply hectares by about 2.47105. So 3 hectares is about 7.41 acres.

How big is an acre?

An acre is 43560 square feet, or about 4046.86 square meters. So it is a defined amount of area, not a fixed shape.

How big is a hectare?

A hectare is 10000 square meters, a square 100 meters on a side. So it is about 2.47 acres.

Why is a square meter not 3.28 square feet?

Because area squares the length factor, a square meter is 3.2808 squared, which is about 10.76 square feet.

How many decimals does it show?

You choose, from a whole number up to eight decimals. Because the page keeps full precision inside, the answer does not drift when you change it.

Can it convert a whole list at once?

No. It shows one figure in every unit at once. So convert values one at a time, which keeps each answer and its factor clear.

Does it round or truncate?

It rounds to the decimals you pick, and it rounds only the display. Therefore, the value behind it stays exact for the next conversion.

Why do my hand maths differ slightly?

Usually because the factor was not squared, or a value was rounded too early. So multiply the factor by itself and keep the full value until the end.

How do I convert square kilometers to square miles?

Divide the square kilometers by about 2.58999. So 5 square kilometers is about 1.93 square miles.

Is an acre bigger than a hectare?

No, it is smaller. A hectare is about 2.47 acres, so the hectare is the larger unit.

Does it need the internet after loading?

No. Because the factors are built into the page, it keeps working offline once the tab is open.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The two panels stack on a small screen, and the fields stay large enough to tap. So a quick conversion works on a phone as well as a desktop.

Does it find a room area from its sides?

No. It converts an area you already have. So multiply the sides yourself first, then convert the result here.

Can I convert square feet to square meters directly?

Yes. The page goes through square meters for you. So you type square feet and read square meters without two steps by hand.

Does it do unusual units like roods or ares?

It focuses on common areas. So for a rarer unit like a rood or an are, the all-units hub covers more of the long tail.

What about my privacy?

Everything happens in the browser, so nothing you type is stored or sent. Of course, you can watch the network tab to confirm it.
