The basics

Jobs This Markdown to HTML Converter Handles for You

This Markdown to HTML converter turns plain-text Markdown into the HTML a web page needs. Type in the Markdown box and the HTML appears on the other side, while a preview below shows how it will look.

It also works backwards. Paste HTML from a web page, a CMS or an email, and you get clean Markdown that you can drop into a README, a static site or a notes app.

The Denwix formatter never sends the XML anywhere, so drafts, private notes and client documents never leave your device. The preview is also safe, because the converter disables any script or dangerous link before it shows you the result.

What Markdown Is

Markdown lets you format text using everyday keyboard characters. A # starts a heading, stars make text bold or italic, and a dash starts a list item. As a result, the text stays easy to read even before you convert it.

Each piece of Markdown maps to one HTML element.

John Gruber created it in 2004, and its history and variants are documented in detail. Today it powers GitHub, Reddit, Slack, Notion, Jekyll, Hugo and countless documentation sites.

Convert Markdown to HTML

Type or paste Markdown into the first box. The HTML updates as you type, with headings, paragraphs, lists, links, images, quotes and code blocks all in place. After that, copy it or save it as page.html.

Markdown in, clean HTML out, as you type.

Code blocks keep their language, so ```js becomes a code element with the class language-js. That is exactly what syntax highlighters such as Prism and highlight.js look for.

Convert HTML to Markdown

Paste HTML into the second box and the Markdown appears in the first. The converter keeps headings, bold and italic text, links, images, lists, quotes, code and tables. Meanwhile, it drops scripts, styles and embedded frames, which have no place in Markdown.

HTML from any page becomes tidy Markdown.

You can choose a dash or a star for list items, and hash marks or underlines for the top headings. So the output matches the style your project already uses.

GitHub Tables, Task Lists and More

With GitHub extras switched on, the converter understands the features people use every day on GitHub. That means tables with column alignment, task lists with checkboxes, strikethrough with double tildes, and bare web addresses that turn into links on their own.

These extras follow GitHub Flavored Markdown, the dialect GitHub sets out in its own writing and formatting syntax guide. If you need strict, plain Markdown instead, switch them off.

Which Markdown Rules It Follows

The core rules come from the CommonMark specification, the standard most modern tools share, which the IETF registered alongside the other dialects in RFC 7764. That covers the common cases: headings, emphasis, links, reference links, lists, nested lists, quotes and code. Rare edge cases from the full spec may differ slightly.

Safe to Paste Anything

Markdown can contain raw HTML, and that is how many sites get attacked. So by default, this converter shows HTML tags inside Markdown as plain text. If you trust the source, tick Allow raw HTML tags, and the converter keeps the tags but strips out scripts, frames and event handlers.

Either way, the converter checks every link. A link to javascript: or a similar scheme becomes a harmless #, and the checks table tells you how many it changed.

Checks That Spot Everyday Markdown Errors

Below the preview, a checks table looks at the result. It warns when a heading level is skipped, for example an H2 followed by an H4, which confuses screen readers and search engines. It also flags images without alt text and pages with more than one H1.

For a full review of a live page’s headings, our heading tag analyzer reads any URL and shows its outline.

Markdown for README Files

Almost every project on GitHub starts with a README.md file. So if your documentation lives in an old HTML page, paste it into the HTML box, copy the Markdown, and your README is ready in seconds.

HTML pasted in the second box comes back as Markdown too. For example, when a client wants the README as a web page, convert the Markdown to HTML and drop it into any template.

Markdown Inside Jekyll, Hugo and Astro

Jekyll, Hugo, Eleventy, Astro and Docusaurus all build websites from Markdown files. Therefore moving an old site to one of them usually means turning many HTML pages into Markdown first, and this converter handles that one page at a time.

Before you commit the files, check the checks table. It points out skipped heading levels and images without alt text, both of which a static site would publish as they are.

Bringing Text in From Word or Google Docs

Copying from Word or Google Docs usually brings a lot of hidden styling with it. First paste the text into your CMS or an email draft, then copy the HTML and paste it here. The converter keeps the structure, such as headings, lists and links, and leaves the fonts and colours behind.

As a result, you get clean Markdown that you can store, edit and reuse anywhere, without the clutter that office tools add.

Formatting Text Without Touching the Mouse

Many writers prefer Markdown because they never need to reach for the mouse. Instead of clicking a toolbar, you type two stars for bold or a hash for a heading, and you keep your train of thought. Later, this page turns the draft into HTML in one step. Meanwhile, the original notes stay readable in any plain text editor, even years from now.

Getting Tables Right

A table needs two things: a header row and, right under it, a row of dashes between pipes. Without that divider row, the converter reads the lines as plain text, so the table never appears.

The other rows can be ragged, because the converter lines up the cells for you. In addition, a colon on either side of the dashes sets the column alignment, and the preview shows it straight away.

Finally, keep each table simple. Markdown has no way to merge cells, so if a layout needs that, keep the table as HTML in your page instead.

Where People Use It

Writers draft in Markdown and paste the HTML into a CMS that has no Markdown support. Developers move old HTML docs into a Markdown site. Support teams turn help-desk pages into a knowledge base, and students clean up notes copied from the web.

In each case, the two-way design saves time. You can convert, edit the Markdown, and convert again, without retyping anything.

Tips for Clean Markdown

Leave a blank line between blocks, such as before a list or after a heading. Indent nested list items by two or four spaces, and fence code with three backticks instead of indenting it. Also, give every image a short description inside the brackets.

When you are done, count the words with our word counter, or check the page title and description with the SERP snippet preview.

Four steps

Turning Markdown Into HTML on Denwix

Both boxes update as you type, so there is no convert button.

  • 1

    Paste your Markdown

Or paste HTML in the other box to go the other way.

  • 2

    Check the preview

It shows headings, lists, tables and code as they will look.

  • 3

    Read the checks

Fix skipped headings or images without alt text.

  • 4

    Copy or download

Take the HTML or the Markdown as text or as a file.

Good habits

Tips for Writing Markdown

Follow these, and your Markdown converts the same way everywhere.

  • Surround every list, quote and code fence with an empty row. Put one before lists, quotes and code.
  • Fence your code. Three backticks and a language name beat indenting.
  • Use one H1. Start sections with ## and step down one level at a time.
  • Describe every image. Whatever sits inside the square brackets turns into the alt text.
  • Indent nested lists evenly. Two or four spaces, but the same everywhere.
  • Keep one list marker. Mixing - and * can split a list in two.
Common slips

Six Mistakes With Markdown

Each one breaks the layout or the meaning.

  • Bullets that start on the line right after a paragraph

Some tools then read the list as part of the paragraph.

  • Underscores inside words

A name like my_file_name can turn italic in older tools.

  • Unclosed code fences

Everything after them turns into code.

  • Pasting untrusted HTML

Scripts can hide inside it, so keep raw HTML off unless you trust it.

  • Tables without a divider row

The |---| line under the header is required.

  • Skipping heading levels

Going from ## to #### confuses readers and search engines.
