The short version

What A Text Repeater Does For You

A text repeater copies a piece of text again and again. You choose how many times, and what goes in the gaps. So you never paste the same words fifty times by hand.

This tool does more than repeat. First, it can repeat each word, each line or each character. Then it can shuffle lines, build numbered strings from a template, flip text upside down and fix quote marks.

People use a text repeater to fill a design with sample text, to stress test a form, or to make a list of test data. Also, writers use it for patterns and for fun.

Everything runs in your browser. So your text never leaves your device.

How The Text Repeater Works

You type or paste some text and pick a mode. Then the tool builds the result as you type. The counts of characters, words and lines update at once.

Copy the result, save it as a text file, or send it back in as your next input.

For more detail, see: Wikipedia article on the Fisher-Yates shuffle.

Repeat Text Many Times

Pick Repeat the text, then set how many times. The tool repeats the whole text and joins the copies with the separator you choose.

For example, three copies with a new line after each one make a list of three lines.

Choose What Goes In The Gap

The separator can be a new line, a space, a comma and a space, a tab or nothing at all. You can also type your own text, such as a pipe or a dash.

So one setting turns the same copies into a list, a sentence or a single long string.

Number Each Copy

Tick Number each copy, and every copy starts with 1., 2., 3. and so on. This works when you repeat the whole text.

Repeat Each Word, Line Or Character

Switch the Repeat list to Each word, and every word appears the number of times you set. So hello world becomes hello hello world world.

Each line works the same way for lists. Then Each character turns hi into hhii.

Shuffle Lines, Words And Letters

Shuffle mixes your text in a fair random order. You can shuffle the lines, the words, the letters inside each word, or every character.

When you shuffle inside words, the first and last letter stay put. So the text stays readable.

Pick Random Lines

Type a number in Keep only this many to pick that many lines at random. This turns the tool into a name picker or a raffle draw.

Then click Run again to draw a new set.

How Fair The Shuffle Is

The shuffle uses the Fisher-Yates method and the secure random numbers of your browser. So every order has the same chance, and no order wins out.

Build Strings From A Template

Write one line with tokens, and the tool repeats it with changing values. The token {n} counts up, {i} counts from zero, and {n:3} pads a number to three digits.

Also, {r:1-100} gives a random whole number, and {c:red|green|blue} cycles through a list.

Set The Start And The Step

Set the first number and the step. A start of 10 and a step of 5 gives 10, 15, 20 and so on. A negative step counts down.

Flip Text Upside Down

The flip mode swaps each letter for a look-alike character that seems turned around, and it reverses the order. So your text reads upside down on screen.

Untick Also reverse the order to flip the letters only.

Where Upside Down Text Works

It works in chats, bios and posts, since the result is plain text made of Unicode characters. However, some fonts lack a few of the symbols, so check the result where you plan to post it.

Fix Quote Marks

Word processors turn straight quotes into curly ones, and code editors dislike that. Pick Straight quotes to turn every curly mark back into a plain one.

Or pick Curly quotes to make your text look typeset.

Smart Quotes Done Right

The curly mode looks at the character before each mark. So a quote after a space opens, and a quote after a letter closes.

An apostrophe in it is or Jo is turns into the right mark too. Years such as the 90s keep their apostrophe.

Dashes And Dots

Tick Also fix dashes and dots. Then two hyphens turn into an en dash, three turn into an em dash, and three dots turn into one ellipsis character.

In straight mode, the tool does the reverse.

Limits

The tool reads up to 200,000 characters of input and writes up to 2 million characters. You can ask for up to 10,000 copies.

If a result grows past the cap, the tool cuts it and tells you.

Safe By Design

First, the tool works in your browser. It sends nothing, and it stores nothing. So your text stays yours.

How it works

Using The Text Repeater, Step By Step

Four steps take you from plain text to the result you need.

  • 1

    Pick a mode

Choose repeat, shuffle, template, flip or quotes.

The result and its counts update as you type.

  • Big jobs, no fuss

Ask for up to 10,000 copies and get up to 2 million characters.

  • Nothing leaves your tab

Your browser does the work. We never see your text.

Good habits

Habits For Using A Text Repeater Well

A few habits keep your results clean and your page quick.

  • Start with a small count. Try three copies first, then raise the number once the result looks right.
  • Pick the separator first. A new line makes a list, and a space makes a sentence.
  • Use the template for numbers. A counter beats a repeated word when you need a numbered list.
  • Shuffle a copy. Keep your original list safe, and shuffle a copy of it.
  • Run again for a new draw. Each run gives a new random order.
  • Check flipped text before you post. Some fonts lack a few of the symbols.
  • Use straight quotes in code. Curly quotes break code and config files.
  • Keep test text clearly fake. Use sample words instead of real names and emails.
  • Watch the size. A huge result can slow a page, so copy it out and clear the box.
Worth avoiding

Common Mistakes When You Repeat Text

Each of these quietly spoils a result.

  • No separator

Without one, the copies glue together into a single long word.

  • Far too many copies

A huge count fills a page with text and slows it down.

  • Curly quotes in code

They break code, so switch them to straight quotes.

  • Shuffling the original

You lose the first order. Shuffle a copy instead.

  • Random picks for secrets

This picker suits raffles and games. Use a password generator for secrets.

  • Forgetting the padding

Use {n:3} for 001, 002 and 003, so the numbers sort in order.

Pick The letters inside each word. The tool keeps the first and last letter of every word, and it mixes the rest.

What is template mode for?

It builds many lines from one line. For example, Item {n} gives Item 1, Item 2 and so on. So it suits test data, ids and lists.

What do the tokens mean?

The token {n} is a counter, and {i} counts from zero. Then {n:3} pads to three digits, {r:1-100} gives a random number, and {c:a|b|c} cycles through a list.

How do I count down?

Set the first number to 10 and the step to -1. Then {n} gives 10, 9, 8 and so on.

How do I add leading zeros?

Add a width to the token, such as {n:3}. So 7 becomes 007.

Can a template use random numbers?

Why do some letters look odd when flipped?

Flipped text uses look-alike Unicode characters. However, some fonts lack a few of them, so those symbols may look different.

Can I use flipped text on social media?

Usually, yes. The result is plain text. Still, check how it looks on the site where you plan to post.

How do I turn curly quotes into straight quotes?

Pick Fix quote marks and Straight quotes. Then paste your text, and every curly mark turns into a plain one.
